The rotating beam of the centrifuge extends 27 meters each side of the hub at one enf is the counterwight (or more properly a "countermass"), to balance out the mass of the soil container and its speciment at the other end.

For safety reasons, while it is spinning no one is in its confinement chamber. The monitor showing the flashes of light is live video of the tip of the centrifuge as it spins.

A U.C. Davis laboratory researcher explains how the earthquake shaking is triggered while the centrifuge is spinning, and how he cue the lead researcher at the control desk to begin and stop saving data.

Time as well as the dimensions of the specimen are scaled, with the simulated earthquake shaking occurring over a very brief period of time. The centrifuge controller calls out "Save data" just prior to the shaking, then "Shaking," then "You're Done."
